Final poster

After having problems getting the right props to use my own photos i was forced to source one of the photos (the wristband) from the internet. As i finished this poster close to the deadline i did not have a lot of time to organise a focus group. I was stuck between the format of the title and after asking a few people they decided that the second, overlapping title looked better.

These were the 2 options:

1.                                                                                                        2.

As i created this poster to be displayed in numerous places i made it large and high quality so if needed it can be scaled to size without loss of quality. Below are mock ups of the poster being displayed in public settings.

Magazine Cover Final

After taking into consideration the comments i received on my first draft i changed the magazine cover accordingly:
  • I removed the blood spatter on character pictures below
  • Removed the visible black undershirt
  • Removed the glow around my character
  • Improved the outlines and bleeding edges of pictures
  • Added a background so it seems less empty
  • Made the subject 12 section bigger, heightened the contrast and made the 31 section smaller and reduced the contrast and brightness so it is more obvious which is the main story
  • Lengthened the body as it didn't reach the end of the page
  • Made the header and footer the same colour as the masthead
  • Reduced contrast of the "31" clown

Voice over update

For the reporter voice over in my trailer I have asked people on social networks and my friends to give me voice samples so I can compare them and find which seems more realistic and professional. I am asking both male and females and will try to get some audience feedback to find narrow down the voices and help me find the voice I will use.

I received 11 recordings and have used friends and family to find which sound most realistic and most like a news reporter. I have narrowed it down to 2 recordings. Below is a survey to help find the one i will be using in my trailer. Create your own user feedback survey

After collecting multiple responses and looking at the results i have decided to use recording 2 that is where the majority vote is.

Magazine Cover first draft

This is the first version of my magazine cover. I included a photo of my main character as this is a convention on screams magazine covers. I have also kept the dimensions on a scream magazine in my cover.

To ensure that this is up to standards i printed it to see any problems not visible on a computer screen and asked people to comment on it. Below are some of the comments i received:
  • Blood spatter on character pictures below
  • Black undershirt showing
  • Yellow price circle cuts off before edge
  • Outline of clown and "31"and "a rob zombie film" visible
  • Authentic features.
  • Too much empty space
  • Character's body does not reach the end of the page.
  • Which is the main story?
  • White glow around Character doesn't fit with genre of film and magazine.
  • Blood header and footer are a different colour to the masthead.

Magazine Development

As my production is in the horror/thriller genre the magazine will be a horror film magazine. Horror film magazines are more likely to feature more independent and smaller films as they have a niche refined audience.

I will be using the horror film magazine 'Scream' to feature my film. Below is the cover that i will use based off of many 'Scream' front covers i have looked at. As i have yet to have a photoshoot for the magazine i have left where the main image would be, blank. I have included everything that is on a scream magazine cover i.e Masthead, Tagline, Barcode, Issue number, Price, Date, Website, Cover line, Cover story's etc. I have also kept the film's font the same to keep it recognisable and to keep continuity between my products.

Magazine Cover Layout

From looking at various film magazine covers i have developed an outline for the layout. Magazine covers often have the main image in the background and all of the text apart from the masthead overlapping. The placing of the barcode isn't the same in all magazines, sometimes it is placed on the back cover and sometimes it is placed on the bottom right of the front cover.

The layout for film magazines is more or less the same in every genre. e.g

Poster ideas

On the left are some very rough ideas for film posters and on the right are Photoshop mock ups of the ideas. To keep some continuity between these poster ideas i kept the biohazard sign.

1) This poster idea is a teaser poster as it doesn't contain any information about the cast and doesn't give anything away about the plot. This poster is styled after a biohazard/caution as one is displayed in the trailer. If i were to choose this poster i would improve it by adding a film website and my idents as they feature in teaser posters as well as theatricals yet they are not included in this draft,

2) This is a theatrical mock up of the poster design. The font used was chosen because it resembles that of the text on a prescription or on a doctors note.

I have chosen to further develop the second poster. To improve this i will have to photograph the props myself as the ones in this mock up were found on the internet.

Location Shots

So far in the filming process i have only filmed my locations as mine and my actors schedules have been hard to co-ordinate.

Swingset Shot
This is the first shot of the swings i filmed. The purpose of this is to give the idea that there is no happiness and the feeling of emptiness. I decided not to use this as i feel it seems too promising due to the sun being in the shot.

This is the second shot i took of the swings, this time from the other side without the sun glare. I have chosen to use this shot of the swings as they seem less hopeful.

But i still feel like it is too bright and happy for my production so to counter this i lowered the contrast and the brightness to further the feeling of emptiness and despair.

Poster research

Powered by emaze

After researching posters i have decided that i will be creating a theatrical poster as the theatrical poster is often released shortly after the teaser trailer so i feel it would be fitting to do this as it follows the conventions of film and poster releasing.

Character Backstory

Lily Potter:  A 20 year old girl that for the past year has been forced deal with her parents and little brothers death. Her ways of dealing with their deaths consisted of shutting down everyone else in her life until she heard on the radio about a drug trial for a possible cure and jumped at the opportunity to help those like her.

Character Changes

After considering the age of my lead actor more i have decided to change the age and backstory of the main character.

I have changed the age of my character to 20 as it seems more realistic that, that is the age of my main actor.

I have also changed the backstory of my main character. Originally the main character entered the cure trial because her husband died of the disease and she wants to avenge him. After the age change i had to change the story to adapt to this. Now the back story is that the main characters family were killed by the disease instead of a husband.

I think this change will help my audience enjoy my production more as it has realistically aged characters for my actors.

Filming update

Props and Mise-en-scene

A very important part to making a production of high quality is the props and Mise-en-scene. As i am getting closer to filming i will need to list the props and Mise-en-scene i'll be using in my trailer (below).

  • Caution and Biohazard Signs
  • Lab coat
  • Plain clothes (Like scrubs)
  • Fake drug/pill
  • Mirror
  • Small torch
  • Surgical mask

Idents

I have decided to call my production company Screech Studios. I created this ident to fit with the horror genre. I did this through my font choice and the colours. Below is the still image and the animated versions of this ident. I added a 'screech' sound effect to the animated version to clarify that the film is in the horror genre.

Screech Ident from Emily Apps on Vimeo.

I also created an ident for the distributor. From my ident research post i decided that the distribution company ident does not have to be based around the horror genre meaning i can name it something unrelated to horror but i may still customise it to fit with the film. I have named the distribution company Pinwheel Pictures and have added an effect to the animation to show that the film is in the horror genre.  This is the animated version:

Pinwheel Pictures Ident from Emily Apps on Vimeo.

Ident Research

A film ident is basically a production or distribution companies logo that is played before a trailer or film. It is usually the companies logo animated into a clip between 1-5 seconds, but this is different for teaser trailers as they are very short in length and the idents should be a fraction of the trailer.

I am planning on having 2 idents in my trailer. One for the production company and another for the distribution company.  For most production company idents that are included in  horror films/trailers they are either companies that make horror films exclusively or they create in a wide range of genres.

Original ident
If a generally production company have their ident in a film they most of the time change their ident to fit with the genre or film subject. An example of this is Lionsgate. Lionsgate create for a variety of different genre films for example action and adventure, comedy, family, Sci-fi and horror. Lionsgate’s typical logo is grey. But they changed their ident and colour scheme to fit with the horror genre when they create a horror film. They changed the background/clouds to be red, this is becuase red is a conventional colour in
Horror film ident
horror films as it connotate blood and death.

Many horror production companies have their idents fit with the horror genre. This can be done with conventional horror colours such as red or black or horror related items such as abandoned houses or skulls. An example is Dark Castle Entertainment, they are known for films such as house of wax or orphan. Their ident includes castles, full moons and dark clouds.

Casting Update

As i have yet to receive a response on star now for my actors i have chosen to cast my friends. As their schedules match up with mine and are in the 16-23 age range my target audience prefer.

For the female character (yet to be named) i have chosen to cast Lily Potter.
She is 18 years old so is perfect for the cast age my audience like.
I have chosen to cast Harley Golder as the Doctor.
He is 17 years old so he also fits in the cast age range.
As he is only 17 and doctors are usually 25+ it may be a problem. But to over come this i will keep from showing his face with either keeping it out of the shot or wearing a surgical mask.

Casting

As my production is live action i will need to cast actors to play my characters. From my survey i found that my audience would like a cast made up of teenagers aged 16-23 or a mixed age cast. I have 2 choices with my cast i can either use class mates and hire internally or i can hire externally using casting sites such as StarNow or CastNet.

If i were to hire externally it would allow me to have a mixed cast and possibly more experienced and professional actors, this would be my first choice is casting but if i can not find suitable actors that are available at the right times i will use my classmates as they are easier to communicate with and are more likely to have schedules similar to mine.

I have posted a listing on star now to find my actors

Location Planning

Empty streets

To show that everyone has contained themselves inside due to the disease i will film some surveying shots of empty streets. I will most likely use the street where i live but if it becomes busy and is not empty enough i will find a less used location to film. On the right is a picture of my street, as it is usually very busy and doesn't have an abandoned or deserted feel to it i may have to add effects in editing to change this. One effect i could use on the footage/pictures of my street is lowering the brightness and contrast. On the right is an example of this.

Doctors office or Interview room

I will need a location that looks like a doctors office or an interview room for the doctor to ask the woman questions. Below are pictures of a doctors office and an interview room. I would like my locations to look like this. As i do not have access to a doctors office or a location similar to that, i will have to use an interview room. For this i will most likely use a classroom or an office.

Isolation room/Containment room
I want the isolation room to be styled after a room in a psychiatric hospital, simple and safe. Again as i do not have access to a psychiatric hospital room i will most likely use an empty white walled room.

Starting to story board

I have begun storyboarding my trailer shot by shot to help further refine my planning. I will be drawing my trailer shot for shot. Below is a picture of what i have so far. This storyboard may not be final as thing may change in the filming process e.g changing location.

Story line ideas and exploring narrative theories.

Below i have written some variations of my story using different narrative structures such as linear, episodic, non linear etc.

Original/Linear:
A disease has killed thousands of people so a doctor has began human trials with a drug he thinks will cure it. A women widowed by the disease volunteered for the trials. Everything was going as planned, she was reacting as expected and she wasn't showing any signs of the diseases until things start to change. Paranoia and hallucinations set in. Blackouts became part of her regular schedule and horrific things started happening. Her nightmares seemed to be connected with the horrible incidents that had been happening around her. She realised that during her blackouts she was the one causing the incidents. She tried her hardest to control the blackouts but she had no luck. Eventually the doctors realised that its the cure that is causing these occurrences and try to remove it from her system. (plot spoiler) Awake she is disease free but asleep she is a killer.

Episodic:
If the story was episodic the first 'episode' of the film would be titled "The Outbreak", in this the narrative would focus when and how the epidemic began. The second episode would focus on the fiance's death and would be titled "The Tragedy". The next would be "The Trials" and would focus on the trial part of the story up until things start being abnormal e.g blackout and paranoia (the 'exciting incidents'). The narrative would continue in episodes for the rest of the film separating it similar to chapters. The narrative is different to the others and it has more focus on life before the outbreak and what drives the main character. This is different to a non linear structure as it is still chronological but separated more defined sections.

Non-linear:
If the story was in a non-linear format the narrative would start with the current state, where her fiance has already died (Present), then it would jump to a flash back to the first outbreak and how the world reacted, another flashback would be when her fiance died and maybe another before the disease, when life was normal (Past). The narrative would jump between present and past when the event is pivotal to the story. For example if a doctor were to interview the woman and ask if she has had contact with anyone who had the disease there would be a flash back to her life with her fiance or when she realises that she is the one killing people and causing horrific incidents there are flashbacks to when she commits the acts.

A film that presents this non-linear narrative is Slumdog Millionaire. When the main character is being interrogated about how he knew all the answers on Who wants to be a millionaire. He’s suspected of cheating, but when asked how he knew the answer to each question, he tells the story via flashback to a time of his life where he learned the answer to the question.

Multi-Strand:
A multi strand narrative follows multiple characters/story's. Most of the time the story's connect or the characters near the end of the story. As my story has very few characters it would be difficult to have this narrative format unless i create more characters.

If i were to adapt my story to fit this narrative structure i would add more characters that are in the drug trial. The story would follow 4 participants in the trial and how they react differently to the drug. The woman's (main character in the other narratives) story is still the same. There are 2 more male participants and 1 other female. The extra characters would slowly die off, possibly by the woman, side effects of the cure or from the disease. When a character dies their story would get cut. If the story was multi strand i would end the film with the woman dying and her story getting cut.

Survey Results

I created a survey on survey monkey for audience research to help me narrow down who my target audience might be and help me tailor the trailer/film to that audience. I posted the link on multiple social media sites which allowed me to gain 17 results.

Below is the survey i created:
Create your own user feedback survey

Here are my findings:

Powered by emaze

Overall what i have found from this survey is that my target audience will be a mix between 13-17 and 18-25 years old but mainly the latter and there is no targeted gender. The horror sub-genre will be psychological and the age my cast will preferably mixed however 16-23 years old is also an option.

I used survey monkey to create this survey as it is simple to set up and analyse results. If i were to improve this survey i would add some explanations to the sub genres because i think that some people didn't know what they were e.g body horror. I would also try and get the survey out to a wider audience as i mainly distributed it through my friends on Facebook and other social medias.

Audience Research

I did some research on Pete Buckingham, head of distribution and exhibition for the UK film council to understand more about audiences and audience theory.

Here are some statistics about UK audiences:

Young- 15-24 Year olds represent 32% of the population, but 40% of the cinema audience. By contrast 55+ represent 34% of the population, but only 20% of the cinema audience. 35-44 Year olds who make up 38% of cinema audience represent 35% of the population

Upmarket- ABC1s represent 49% of the population, but 60% of the cinema audience. We can assume the older the audience, the more upmarket.

Frequency- 15-34 Year olds represent 60% of heavy cinema goers and within that 40% are from the 15-24 group. Medium cinema goers are 50% of 25-44 year olds. The 55+ make up 32% of the light cinema goers.

From this information we see there are two main audience types, the young and the upmarket who are older people. The upmarket audience tend to frown upon the younger audience who usually prefer multiplex cinemas because it makes it a more social event. For example the ODEON in Norwich has restaurants and clubs in the vicinity, meaning it is highly likely their main customers are young people. Whereas the upmarket audience are more likely to go to an art house to watch the films, which appeals to them.

Audiences can also be categorised by what are known as clusters. These are groups of people based on averages who follow certain patterns when watching films. They include:

Hero seeker- Don't go out much, place well in advance

Impulsive materialist- Fashion victim, affluent, film-dinner-drinks, word of mouth is key

Film fanatics- Male, pre-plan their trip, 25-44, go in 2s, review-led

Impressionable socialites- Male/Female, under 25, like blockbusters, led by ads

Modern parents- Kids pressuring the parents

Fun lovers- Not film literate, big film and video consumers

Youth of today- See films as soon as they come out

These categories are not entirely accurate as they are based on averages and trends. They don't provide enough information for writers or director to use when deciding on their audience.

Pete asked audiences which activities were more important to them than films, here were the results:

Plot line Idea

Here is an ideas about how i would construct the trailer:

The trailer starts with a radio news story about a disease and mentions human trails for a cure to set up the story, while the story's audio plays there are shots of empty streets and signs that warn people to stay inside and other indicators of an epidemic. The audio stops and the camera fades out into a static visual and sound until it steadies and shows a doctor setting up a camera to record an interview, this is when the main character is introduced and the doctor asks for her age, name, if she's had any contact with people who have the disease etc. The next few shots are the women taking the pills/cure the shots look almost identical apart from changing clothes/hair to show time passing. The pace of the shots speed up with intensifying music until they abruptly stop and theres a shot of the main character staring in a mirror, the shot continues for a while but is broken up by various short shots of her freaking out and shots that will suggest to the audience that she is going insane. These shots will increase in speed and will abruptly end with a black screen. A flashlight will be seen from the camera as if it was from the main characters POV and a doctor was checking her pupils, this would be accompanied with the sound of a shallow heart beat. It will then suddenly stop and cut to a shot of the doctor being strangled by her with screaming over the top. This will then fade to the title of the film with the films information e.i website, release date, production companies.

Below is a timeline i have created that will help me stay on track to meet my deadline. I believe that this timeline will allow me to create my products to a high quality. Film Certificates

To help me fully understand who my audience will be i researched film certificates and what qualifies a film to be a certain classification. These criteria will influence the decisions i make in my production.

Tuesday 10 November 2015

Initial trailer idea

The story will revolve around a girl who is taking part in a drug trial for a disease that has plagued the country, at first the drug has no effect on her then she starts seeing what she fears. Im thinking that it will be set somewhere styled after a medial isolation room. For my actors i'm hoping to find them on StarNow, this is a casting site mostly for actors starting out trying to gain experience. I would like for the trailer to start off slow and to increase in pace as this is conventional is horror trailers also i would like it to last between 1-1:30 seconds so its long enough to give my audience enough information about the film but not so long that its classed as a full trailer as i would like to the audience guessing some aspects of the film.

Film Magazine Cover Analysis- Fangoria

Below is a flip book analysing the insidious issue of fangoria magazine. I choose to analyse this magazine because the production i will be creating will be of the horror genre and as fangoria is centred around horror films it seems like a good place to get inspiration from.

28 Days Later Teaser Analysis

28 Days Later is a 2002 zombie horror film directed by Danny Boyle. The film is about a breakdown in society after a highly contagious virus is accidentally released, causing an epidemic. Throughout the film we follow four survivors in their struggle to cope with the destruction of their society. The teaser trailer is a minute and a half long which is conventional for a teaser trailer.
The trailer starts by showing the Fox starting sequence and slowly shutting off the searchlights. This suggest evacuation and emergency.  Then it shows a caption reading “On the first day” which flashes in time with what sounds like warning alarms. This immediately tells the audience that something bad has happened.  Another caption then follows, reading “EXPOSURE”. At this point, the sound consists of ape like noises, and then a woman crying “let me out”. This could connote that the virus which will be released in this film makes people react in an animalistic behaviour.

The dark background is typical of the horror genre, as the dark connotes danger and the unknown. The font seems to vibrate as a siren sounds, which reinforces the immediate danger and intrigues the viewer as to what the emergency is.  The fact there is no dialogue in the whole teaser trailer reinforces the idea of an epidemic and the loss of humanity.

It then cuts to a point of view shot lasting a second, in which the camera tracks towards a woman very quickly. This adds to the tension as the speed of the shot allow the audience to believe the point of view shot is from someone who is infected with the virus. It then cuts to another screen caption which reads “Day 3”, followed by “INFECTION”. Again, there is some audio that sounds like some kind of animal. This sound adds to the tension of the trailer because it is the unknown. Not knowing what the noise is specifically would keep the audience on the edge of their seat, wanting to discover more from the trailer.

It then cuts to another shot which lasts less than a second. It is not too clear as to what is happening in this shot due to the speed of it and dark lighting conditions. There are three characters in the shot, two of which are running towards a car whereas the other is stood still. It is unclear as to whether or not the people in this shot are infected or not. There are also, what appears to be rats crawling along the ground in the shot. By adding hundreds of rats in this shot, this could mean that the virus is spreading further as rats are known for carrying diseases. This extremely quick shot adds to the tension from the previous shot in which the audience is left confused, wanting to see more.

It then cuts to another screen caption shot which reads “Day 8”, followed by a quick shot of a woman lying on the floor. Again, the audience is left unaware as to what is going on in the shot. It then cuts back to another screen caption shot reading “EPIDEMIC”. These short screen captions help attract the audience because it doesn’t give away too much about the film. By not explaining in much detail, this makes the audience think about the film more, as they have to figure out what is going on themselves. It then cuts to a low angle shot of people running and then a flash of light. There are also sounds of a what could be defibrillator, this shows us that the virus is killing people and perhaps the hospitals cant help.  These extremely quick shots are then followed by another screen caption reading “Day 15”. It then cuts back to another shot of people running in which the camera is tracking alongside their legs.

It then cuts to another screen caption reading “EVACUATION” with the sound of sirens playing implying an emergency. A quick shot of a character swinging a sharp weapon towards the camera is then shown, lasting approximately half a second. In this shot the camera is most likely in an victims or maybe one of the infected's point of view. It then cuts back to another screen caption reading “Day 20”. These quick paced shots between each screen caption continue to build to the tension. By making each shot no longer than a second, the audience is left unsatisfied, wanting to see more from each particular scene.

It then cuts to six shots consisting of different angle shots of a shop blowing up and an extreme close up of an eye opening. These six shots are shown within the space of two seconds. By speeding up the pace of the shots even more, the tension builds even higher than before. It then cuts back to another screen caption shot reading “DEVASTATION” which holds the tension at a standstill for the audience as they wait to witness more. It then cuts to a shot of the man who opened his eyes in a previous shot getting up from a hospital bed. It is shown from a high angle, in which the hospital setting is completely messy. This helps set the scene for the audience and also the character as we are both unsure as to what is happening. However, the audience has already seen half of the trailer before this character appears. This adds adds an irony to the trailer because the audience is aware of the virus already, whereas the character that now appears in the trailer seems to have no idea as to what is going on.

It then cuts to another screen caption reading “28 days later...” , the text os pulsing much like that of a heartbeat. The text could connote that this is where the film/trailer really begins because ’28 Days Later’ is the name of the film. It then shows a series of shots where the character walks around the messy hospital setting where there appears to be no sign of civilization. It then cuts to a series of shots including high and low angles of London in a complete mess, where again there are no signs of civilization except the character from the hospital who is now calling “hello” repeatedly. The man who appears in the trailer is the only person who appears in the trailer for a consistent amount of time, allowing the audience to identify him as the main character in this film. The film title/logo shows up and is not fully clear, it is also red. The font is use on the poster as well as the trailer, which creates a sense of continuity and reinforces the movie as a brand. The use of the colour red is typical of the horror genre as it connotes blood and violence. It then shows the a 'from the creator of' screen, this further promotes the film, as Danny Boyle is a respected directer, and these films are well known and were well received, and therefore fans of his may want to go to see the film based on his reputation and experience of his past films.

A final shot of the man’s face reinforces his character’s position as “hero”. The high camera angle causes him to look vulnerable and frightened. The tagline “the days are numbered” seems like a threat or warning. This also leaves the audience questioning, does the 28 days refer to the characters life span from the epidemic of the “infected”, or how long the infection takes. This leaves the viewer intrigued.

This teaser trailer continuously consists of fast shots and screen captions. No shot lasts longer then a second or two, making the trailer extremely tense for the audience and quite literally ‘teasing’ the audience by not giving away too much so that the audience is left wanting to see more.

For my trailer i would like to use the idea of a disease and the hospital setting used here. I also like the shots showing that the main character is alone and will use them as inspiration for my production. However i will not be using the constant text breaking up the trailer as i feel it removes the audience from what is happening and doesn't allow for immersion.
